Friday, October 10 at Four Seasons Seattle
Unity Reception: 6:00 PM
Dinner & Unity Program: 7:00 PM
Unity After Party: 8:30 PM
At the Northwest African American Museum, our mission is to draw on Black heritage to cultivate healing and hope for all. At a time when our society faces deep divides and urgent challenges, we believe courage must be our collective compass. Courage is more than facing uncomfortable truths; it is the resolve to act on them. It is the spirit that carries civil rights leaders across bridges under threat of violence, the resilience that fuels artists to create truth through their work, and the strength of everyday people to stand for justice in their neighborhoods. Courage turns history from static memory into a living force for change.
That is why courage is the theme of this year’s Unity Benefit. This gathering is both a tribute and a call: to honor the sacrifice and strength of those who shaped history, to uplift the artists whose work sparks social change, and to join NAAM in advancing this legacy. Now is the moment to recommit to truth-telling. Together, with courage as our guide, we can shape a future rooted in honesty, hope, and healing for all.
Champions of Unity Honorees
The Champions of Unity Award honors impactful individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to service that exemplify unity and uplift their communities. This year, awards will be bestowed upon Ezra Teshome, global health hero and a founding NAAM board member, and Donald Byrd, citizen artist, Tony nominated choreographer, and impactful Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater.
Ezra Teshome
Ezra Teshome is a global health hero and a founding board member of the Northwest African American Museum. Since the 1990s, he has led teams of volunteers to Ethiopia as part of Rotary International’s polio eradication campaign, including a 2005 effort that reached 16 million children. His dedication earned him recognition by Time magazine as one of ten global health heroes at the Time Global Health Summit. Beyond polio, Teshome has advanced humanitarian projects in Ethiopia by helping deliver ambulances, expand clean water access, and more. Guided by compassion and a lifelong commitment to improving lives, he continues to be a powerful force for health, dignity, and hope.
Donald Byrd
Donald Byrd is a Tony-nominated and Bessie Award-winning choreographer known for his bold, eclectic vision and socially conscious artistry. Since 2002, he has led Spectrum Dance Theater as Artistic Director, advancing a mission of dance as both an art form and a civic instrument. Previously, he founded and directed Donald Byrd/The Group, a critically acclaimed company that toured nationally and internationally for more than two decades. His wide-ranging body of work spans dance, theater, and opera, earning him recognition as a “citizen artist” and one of the most dynamic voices in American performance.
